Residential Services

SCACL provides residential services through the operation of various living arrangements, an Independent Living Program and a Lifeskills Program. Our residential supports are provided to people with a wide range of requirements who live at home, in family care, in supported residences, or live independently.

Assistance with life skills, housekeeping, financial management, shopping, meal preparation, nutrition, health and personal care is provided.

Individualized program planning based on each individual’s unique strengths, gifts and interests with measurable goal setting.

Diverse social activities.

Trained, certified and caring staff

All staff have valid first aid, and are certified annually by the Community Living Health Nurse. This training includes medication administration, seizure protocol, care plan management and universal precautions. Additional training is provided bi-annually by an Occupational Therapist in positioning and transfer.

All staff are encouraged to pursue Community Support Worker (CSW) training at the community college level.

SCACL’s group homes provide a safe and supportive home environment for individuals to live in, whether they require life long supports or wish to develop skills to move into the community independently.

Day Program

The SCACL Day Program offers a range of activities that involve people with developmental disabilities with their own peer group and with the community as a whole.

The activities provide opportunities for self esteem and skill development through vocational, educational, recreational and social programming.

Goals of the program:

  • To expand each individual participants role in the community.
  • To build relationships based on commonality.
  • To assist participants towards self determination, responsibility and independence with respect to individual social needs.

Supported Employment

Supported Employment provides "in house" employment and training opportunities to allow individuals to develop employment skills. The program also approaches possible employers to design mutually beneficial job options for individuals; following up with training, problem solving, and support.

Goals of the Supported Employment Program:

  • To educate and prepare individuals for employment.
  • To provide an opportunity for the community to recognize an individual’s strengths and abilities.
  • To assist individuals to explore career development, training programs, job experience and volunteerism which may lead to meaningful, paid employment.
  • To provide ongoing support and evaluation to participants in our program.

Respite Services

Respite is an important family preservation and family support service. Respite is a vital part of the continuum of family services intended to reduce family stress and to increase family stability.

Respite caregivers offer support to families in caring for their loved ones. Families are involved in selecting their caregiver and in arranging the times that are most suitable, whether it be a couple of hours, a weekend or an extended vacation. They also decide whether respite will be based out of the caregivers home or their own home with community activities as a general focus. Respite caregivers undergo a screening process held by the SCACL Respite Coordinator and Community Living B.C. (CLBC) including criminal record clearance. Caregivers are then matched with families according to individual needs and preferences.

Referrals and Admissions

Families seeking respite should contact Community Living B.C. as service plans come from a CLBC Facilitator. Admissions are based on program capacity.

Art Program

Art Folks is a weekly art program sponsored by SCACL and The Sunshine Coast Arts Centre. Under the mentorship of volunteer artists, persons with disabilities have an avenue to explore their artistic talents, and have worked and exhibited in both acrylic paint and clay mediums. All Paintings are for sale and can be purchased at the Mermaid Street Gallery.
